Arrest of Bahá’í Leaders in Iran: Hopefulness in times of tests

All seven Bahá’ís who form a group that sees to the needs of the Bahá’í community of Iran have been arrested, six of them in early-morning raids on 14 May 2008 at their homes in Tehran. They are, seated from left, Behrouz Tavakkoli and Saeid Rezaie, and, standing, Fariba Kamalabadi, Vahid Tizfahm, Jamaloddin Khanjani, Afif Naeimi, and Mahvash Sabet.

The recent arrest and imprisonment of Bahá’í leaders in Iran is disconcerting and further underscores the plight of the believers in the Cradle of the Faith. Such news causes pain in the hearts of the believers around globe given the history and increased up tick of persecution against the Iranian Bahá’í community. The Bahá’í Faith aims to eliminate such acts of religious persecution and teaches the unity of humankind. In fact, Bahá’u’lláh states:

That which the Lord hath ordained as the sovereign remedy and mightiest instrument for the healing of all the world is the union of all its peoples in one universal Cause, one common Faith.

Such treatment of Bahá’ís who’s teaching promote standards which are the very antithesis to the actions visited upon them is perhaps the most disheartening aspect of this recent news. However, solace can be found in the writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá:

Indeed, the attacks and the obstructiveness of the ignorant but cause the Word of God to be exalted, and spread His signs and tokens far and wide. Were it not for this opposition by the disdainful, this obduracy of the slanderers, this shouting from the pulpits, this crying and wailing of great and small alike, these accusations of unbelief levelled by the ignorant, this uproar from the foolish—how could news of the advent of the Primal Point and the bright dawning of the Day-Star of Bahá ever have reached to east and west? How else could the planet have been rocked from pole to pole?…All these blessings and bestowals, the very means of proclaiming the Faith, have come about through the scorn of the ignorant, the opposition of the foolish, the stubbornness of the dull-witted, the violence of the aggressor. Had it not been for these things, the news of the Báb’s advent would not, to this day, have reached even into lands hard by. Wherefore we should never grieve over the blindness of the unwitting, the attacks of the foolish, the hostility of the low and base, the heedlessness of the divines, the charges of infidelity brought against us by the empty of mind.

~ Selections from the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

All around the globe at this time Bahá’ís are engaged in teaching efforts to spread the message of unity as delivered by Bahá’u’lláh and to proclaim his name. Shortly after news of the arrests were publicized on the Bahá’í News Service, the story was published on CNN’s world news page, reaching untold numbers of readers and acquainting them with the purpose of the Faith, augmenting the activity of Bahá’í teaching worldwide. While there is much cause for sorrow in the recent reported events, we must console ourselves that there is much for which to be thankful in these episodes as well.

Biking

I was sitting in my car in a cul-de-sac late at night. I put my car into reverse and applied pressure to the gas pedal. The car shot backwards suddenly. I pressed the brakes, but there was no response. Backwards I went over the curve and into a pitch black forest. Trees races all around me. I vainly pressed the brake pedal while attempting to steer around trees appear in my rearview mirror. The car eventually broke through the trees and came to a stop on a wooded road.

It was an earlier summer morning. The bright blue glare of sunlight made viewing the road difficult. My cell phone rang. A family friend whom I had not spoken to in years wondered when I was to arrive. I said shortly.

Eyes

Projected on a dark wall in a large sunlit room was a blueprint of a nearby building. Following the display of the blueprint were photos of the roof of this building. Having never seen the roof in person and curious as to the view from the top, I decided make my way to the top of this building.

Throngs of students surrounded the building entrance and many loitered inside. Inside it was much like a hotel with ornate brass escalators which I took to the building’s roof. The roof was more akin to a courtyard, divided by a center median with a gravel path on both sides. Read more…

Grocery

Left my car walking across a crumbled asphalt parking into an old grocery. The grocery was dim inside with random piles of produce lacking proper refrigeration. Ran into an old friend inside who mentioned others whom I had not seen in years were in town. Outside I studied a map for an optimal route to a house I barely recalled. My route options offered the chance of visiting agencies with which I have been conducting business. I considered stopping by.

Park

Been having many vivid dreams as of late. Having failed to record slumbering memories past, I make a new effort to detail visions from dreamland.

Walking towards sunset down concrete paths snaking through shrubs and hills with my wife by my side. Two ghoulishly costumized persons dart across the path ahead behind a bush. Understanding that the individuals are their to intimidate and to frighten, I race towards their position scaring them instead. The same scenario is repeatedly regularly as we make our away down the path and to a nearby hilltop. At the top sits a concession stand and small store. Inside I look at the brightly colored empty tables, the popcorn machine and its stale contents, at the bubbling juice fountain. I walk outside again in front of an open air bowling alley. The attendants are cleaning it and shutting down the lights. My wife walks out of the store and rejoins me. From atop the hill we can see the entire path meandering down down the face of the hill. Ghoulish commandos dart from one hidden position to another in preparation of our advance.

Wading

I recall swimming in some shallow, tree-lined pool filled with tea-colored water. I could sense the murky, muddy bottom squishing between my toes. A friend was nearby calling to me from the shore. I made way to a cove and pulled myself up out of the water by grabbing hold of branches and roots that dipped into the water. I walked a short distance and returned to the water’s edge. Looking downrange through a gap in the trees I saw mother’s and children playing in a complex of sand dunes. Someone on an ATV was zipping up a mountain of sand. I returned to the water only to quickly re-emerge to find my way home. Difficult it was to navigate my way amongst the dense growth along the shoreline.

Lost

Making my way through a long and darkened shopping mall. Resembled an airport terminal. Shoppers and strollers were obstacles in my path. At the mall’s end I exited a door into the brilliant morning sunshine. A sense of urgency seized me upon my emergence. There was somewhere I had to be.

Unfamiliar with the way I struck out in the general direction of my unknown destination. Walking along the tree lined neighborhood streets in the noon summer sun I came to a railway bridge. Several tank cars lied parked on the tracks. I proceed underneath the bridge and a whole new city appeared. A place I’d never seen. Suddenly I was atop a trolley car propelled down the narrow city street. It seemed like China Town. Densely packed shops with hundreds of patrons. Neon signs passing in a rainbow blur. Over the tops of the shops giant skyscrapers vaulted tearing into the now purple even sky. Straight out of Blade Runner. The train picked up speed and the city streets retreated. Far into the dark countryside I was taken. Only the tallest buildings remained in view above the orange glow of the distance foreign city.

The Long Walk Home

Walking home with a friend of mine after a summer rain. Somehow we quickens his paces and finds his way before I do. Nearing the house the at sunset the skies clear. I look into the direction of the clear sky and behold a perfect view of the continents of earth as seen from space, the blue sky serving as the oceans. I was awed by the beauty before, the delicate and fragile suspended in the skies before me. I could see the sunlight from sunset glinting off the distance likes and rivers.

Vacation

I dreamt of friends long gone or missing while by the sea. For the most part I was confined to a small room atop a building with a large window facing the sea. The building alternated between an apartment and a vacation spot. At one point I peered through the curtains to see a long lost friend as my neighbor sitting at a table on his balcony. I refused to greet him. Inside I thought of friends past.

Later the building had shrunk and I was beside the sea. Family was gathered round and inside it was crowded. When it came time to sleep I was forced outside. I wandered for a while and found a bed under some trees. I tried to sleep while the palms overhead blew in the gentle warm breeze. The sound of distant vacationers hung in the air. Once I walked back to the villa and stared through the window. Everyone was either preparing for bed or sleeping. I saw my sister resting on a couch.

Model Shop

A combination of biking and walking along concrete paths and tin covered walkways. People whom I didn’t know on benches lining the way. Eventually I made my way along a path that opened into a road. Inside a car I craned my neck out the window to gaze up an embankment to my left marking the edge of an airbase. Shortly afterwards I was walking through an unguarded gate past the rusting hulks of once proud airframes. A large Soviet bomber loomed green, angular and sprouting with turrets. I wonder how the plane found its home here. Biking later only to stop at a shop. I went inside looking looking for models to assemble. The collection was warn and picked through. A few simple ships and no aircraft. Thankfully no cars. Seemed there was quite an interest on these items as the stock was depleted. My bike sat in center shop. The tire was flat.
